This book presents a comprehensive exploration of an enhanced PON framework that enables direct peer-to-peer (P2P) communication between Optical Network Units (ONUs), integrates Software-Defined Networking (SDN) for dynamic control, and introduces a dedicated wavelength for edge-to-edge data exchange. By introducing the concept of Collaborative P2P Edge Computing within the optical access domain, this work addresses pressing issues in latency, scalability, and privacy that cannot be resolved through traditional cloud-centric paradigms alone.

The architecture, mechanisms, and algorithms proposed in this book are designed not only to accommodate but also to optimize for edge computing applications collaboration. A key innovation presented herein is a novel Dynamic Bandwidth Allocation (DBA) scheme—tailored for peer-to-peer traffic—which operates in concert with hierarchical PON scheduling to ensure Quality of Service (QoS) across heterogeneous traffic types.
